The Future Institute
Balfour Beatty secured a £70 million contract to deliver the Edinburgh Futures Institute, a flagship refurbishment and extension project on behalf of the University of Edinburgh.
Balfour Beatty will be responsible for restoring and connecting six wards; unlocking the building’s wide corridors to create free-flowing areas in the University’s Grade- A listed Old Royal Infirmary hospital building, spanning over 21,000 square meters.
On completion, the development, part-funded by Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal, will provide multiple teaching and learning facilities, function areas, and work spaces for staff, students and the general public.
The company will utilise Building Information Modelling (BIM) and augmented and virtual reality technologies to enhance the restoration process of this iconic building.
Hector Macaulay, Balfour Beatty’s Managing Director of Scotland and Ireland, said: “We have a long history of restoring listed buildings, including the National Museum of Scotland and the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh.
“Combining the latest construction techniques and technologies, we look forward to sympathetically restoring Edinburgh’s Old Royal Infirmary hospital for the wider benefit of the community.”
Works are due to commence in spring 2019 with an overall completion expected ahead of the start of the academic year in 2021. At construction peak, the project will employ workforce of 170 and employ a range of local supply chain partners.
Balfour Beatty awarded CDS as part of their supply chain over 1million pounds of Demolition & Structural Alterations Package which consisted of Temporary supporting the existing Clock Tower whilst cutting Large scale openings through the ground level. The Temporary works for this element alone required an independent Support System Team along with design input from Will rudd Davidson and Maybe and was constructed over 2 levels whilst creating temporary foundations for back propping the super slimshores and removing the old barrel vault ceiling’s. CDS were also responsible supply and delivery of the structural steelwork as part of the permanent install for these openings creating a Goal Post affect of steel each with4 sections of steel on all 5 structural walls, CDS utilized our specialiosts cutting trechniques to reduce the vibration from travelling through existing structures whilst safely demolition walls under temp supports systems.
May I take this opportunity to thank you all for your efforts during the Christmas and New Year shifts. The works were not easy by any stretch of the imagination, compounded by adverse weather conditions , working away from home and site conditions that were not ideal. We completed the works as far as we could and handed back both possessions on time without any accidents or incidents which we should be proud of. We had a couple of high level visits from the client who were content with our efforts and achievements.
