Edinburgh Galleries

What is Edinburgh Galleries?

Interserve were awarded the 22million pounds refurbishment project and commenced in late 2018 however the project has already risen in cost and experienced delays. Originally the £22m project was valued at £9m and was set to complete in 2018, but development was put on hold as it underwent a series of redesigns. Construction News’ sister site, The Architects’ Journal, previously reported that a start on site had been delayed in early 2017 due to value engineering in a bid to keep the project to its revised £16.8m budget. Extra design and project costs meant that the overall project cost still rose to £22m.

Or scope consisted of:-

  • Diamond Drilling 13Nr 300mm diameter cores through the existing foundations @ 9m each in depth
  • Specialists cutting works through the various layers of concrete structure’s for the installation of the pilling works.
  • Supply and installation of the full temp works scheme including the Grouting of the underpinning and on site fabrication works.
  • Demolition, removal and excavation to form the tunnel prior to the formation of the permanent works.

Work started on site at the end of 2018 and the first phase of the project, which included a new entrance area and retail space, was completed in 2019.

The second phase, which will involve the conversion of 1970s buildings into a suite of galleries, was expected to be completed early next year, but the defects will now push the completion date back to the end of 2021.

National Galleries of Scotland director general John Leighton said: “In the course of this work it has become apparent that there are some unexpected defects within the 1970s building which sits beneath the original 19th century National Gallery. These include issues with damp penetration and inadequate drainage in and around the site.

CDS were awarded 3 major specialist’s packages in excess of 1.5million pounds as part of the refurbishment works which included Demolition & Downtakings, Builders work in connection to services and Temporary Support Systems. CDS are still working on the project and have again being able to use the industry’s most advance Remote Demolition Robots to remove vast areas of soft strip, walls and concrete floors in excess of 2m deep along with our specialist cutting techniques to maintain the structural integrity of the existing structures as works progress.  CDS have used our wire sawing and track sawing methods of cutting to great affect as these works progress along with our strong relationship with Maybe we have been able to adequately support areas as concrete is being removed safely.
