The Burrell Collection
Kier Construction Scotland was named the preferred bidder for the main building contract in the multi-million pound overhaul of Glasgow’s Burrell Collection.
The cost of the project has been estimated at £66m, with Glasgow City Council meeting half of that. More than 94 per cent of the project cost has now been raised, including £15m from the National Lottery.
The refurbishment will increase the museum’s public space by 83 per cent, and gallery space will increase my more than a third. Managed by Glasgow Life on behalf of the council, the museum has nearly 9,000 items in its collection.
“It’s an honour to be working with Glasgow Life in the restoration of the home of the Burrell Collection – a national treasure for Scotland,” said Brian McQuade, managing director of Kier Construction Scotland. The Burrell Collection closed to the public in October 2016, allowing work to begin on the refurbishment of the Grade A building and redisplay of the collections, creating a new visitor experience. Before the museum’s temporary closure, only 20 per cent of the collection was on display.
Kier construction awarded CDS the specialists cutting sub contractor as the existing structure was concrete and brick and required a vast amount of structural alterations for new service routes, door openings and new openings for elevators. CDS have now been working on the project for 2 years working closely with Kier construction to provide bespoke cutting and controlled demolition works utilizing our Remote controlled Brokk for internal Concrete removal works eliminating the risk of hand and arm vibration and internal fumes that are genuinely associated to more conventional techniques.
